In Our Time has an interesting discussion about Freud, psychoanalysis, fascism, totalitarianism and dictatorship. Links are made between Freud's theory of the mind and the external structure of the state. Civilisation, the state, parents, all were thought by Freud to control powerful aggressive and sexual instincts. Adam Phillips, the writer and psychoanalyst, makes some challenging and provocative points: how frightened people are of themselves and how frightened people are of freedom and not being governed.
