Catatonic Schizophrenia

This is unusual. This is a silent, short film, from the 1940's. It shows people who have been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

The film shows people who have been diagnosed with catatonic schizophrenia. This used to be much more common in the U.K. than it is now. When I was training in mental health I was told a story, by a very experienced mental health nurse, of a psychiatric mental hospital where people with catatonic schizophrenia were arranged in a row with their arms raised, and their fingers arranged in a V. This was to greet the ward round of a disliked consultant psychiatrist.

For all of the stories you read in the newspapers about the evils of psychiatric drugs, remember this: in the past, demonic possession, trepanation, straight jackets, and cold baths.

Or maybe a mental hospital?
